Courts
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office has eight full-time bailiffs and two full-time Courthouse Security Officers. The bailiff duties include being responsible for the safety of all persons in the courtroom, including court personnel and the audience. The Courthouse Security Officers are responsible for security of both Carthage and Joplin Courthouses.
Bailiffs
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office has eight full-time bailiffs, consisting of a Sergeant and Corporal within the Division. Seven of them are assigned to each Division with the Sergeant being a “floater” when needed. Bailiff duties include being responsible for the safety of all persons in the courtroom, including court personnel and the audience. Bailiffs are responsible for making arrests, overseeing the security of any inmates who are in the courtroom, and keeping order in the court. Bailiffs need to have excellent communication skills with the public, judges and court reporters, as well as being able to work well with the Transportation Division.
Courthouse Security
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office has two full-time Courthouse Security Officers. They are responsible for security of both Carthage and Joplin Courthouses. Duties include securing the outside perimeter of the building, basic knowledge of the RSMO, and must be able to run the x-ray machine and metal detector. They must also have basic knowledge of where officers are in the buildings, and need to have excellent communication skills with the public, judges, and court employees.
