School Resource Officer
The Jasper County Sheriff's Office created a law enforcement/school district liaison position, a School Resource Officer/Deputy (SRO), in 2007. The SRO position is assigned to Cpl. Matt Smith, this position was created to work in conjunction with local school districts in an effort to assist schools in a variety of law enforcement related incidents within the school's property.
The Sheriff's Office SRO position is assigned to the Jasper, Avilla, and Sarcoxie School Districts and during the 2012/2013 school year, Cpl. Smith served approximately 1,900 students within his assigned districts. Cpl. Smith is responsible for assisting the school districts in investigating assaults, property damage, theft, acts of bullying, truancy, assist with at risk students, work closely with the Jasper County Juvenile Office, and assists the Division of Family Services with allegations of abuse or neglect of students in the school districts. The SRO also teaches numerous student education programs, including the D.A.R.E. program, online internet safety, driver's education, stranger awareness, drug and alcohol awareness, anti bullying programs, prescription and over the counter abuse education, and impaired driving education. Not only is an SRO position used as a teaching role for mentoring students, but Cpl. Smith is on hand to respond to any safety related issues that may arise on or near school property.
